poster for La Bola Negra, which I got to enjoy an advance screening of last night courtesy of KCRW...omfg, what an incredible palate cleanse after the darkness of the Musk documentary on Sunday....LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this truly transcendent masterpiece, which features, as does my debut memoir Killing Justice, the struggle to be one's true self, and a journey to try to heal intergenerational trauma in a mother/son relationship through art...Allow the beauty of The Black Ball to transport you to a place where it’s very easy for everyone to be their genuine selves. A place where everything is beautiful and nothing hurts. It is a bewitching knockout of a picture...For all its visual grandeur, La Bola Negra ultimately derives its power from something far simpler: the human need to be known...La Bola Negra through every vignette and character gracefully and beautifully executes the pain and suffering caused when not being your authentic self has no options with a stunning performance from Guitarricadelafuente...La Bola Negra is a powerfully composed, beautifully acted masterpiece that will be cherished for all time...La Bola Negra is at once more conventional and more subversive than its fellow Palme d’Or competitors...Beautiful from both a visual standpoint and a narrative one, Los Javis’ newest film La bola negra is an incredibly big swing, and thankfully it pays off, delivering one of the most immersive viewing experiences you will have this year...A story of class divide, expressions of love and untimely death is done right with the correct amount of painful, bleeding honesty, and so pierces your heart in beautiful ways...An audacious, staggering work of art, and one of the best films of the year. It reminds you what true cinematic epicness feels like, equal parts style and immense, life‑affirming substance...In the end, La Bola Negra is a film whose richness, poetic beauty, and narrative complexity make it rather hard to breakdown into an easy and clean-cut review. Los Javis, with an infinite amount of ambition, pull off this modern classic and then some. It is likely to leave you overwhelmed in your seat, considering both a macrohistorical perspective on memory, truth, and queer erasure as well as a deeper personal one as to what part of yourself are you repressing and what freedom and time are you losing by doing so?...At a time when auteur cinema is increasingly rare, it's a true luxury to sit down and enjoy a film like this...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBVxKt0gKDY
